Contemporary Clothing Exhibition in Vegas

Contemporary Clothing Exhibition in Vegas Wednesday, 23 September 2009
We just got back from Las Vegas where some of the worlds most directional designers go to preview their spring/summer 2010 collection to buyers and media.  In attendance were some independent designers from US, Canada and as far as Tokyo. There were also of course well established brands from all over including US, Japan, Australia, Europe and the UK. Other notable Canadian designers previewing their lines were Philip Sparks, House Of Spy, Beatrice Hollaway, Krane and Wing & Horn

We all basically stayed between the Palm hotel and Treasure Island depending on what was going on the next day as we were between two different shows...

It was definitely a good time and the collection was well received.  We had our agent from NY with us as well as a friend who works in investment banking come to assist with selling the line. long story..don't ask! he's come out with a new blog discussing his foray into the fashion world while working at a prestigious investment bank.

During the day it was pretty much all business (as much business that gets done in Vegas).  At night it was about celebrating with fellow designers...

Below are some pictures of us hanging out there with our agents and friends:

24-7 Style Q&A with Jamil Juma of JUMA Fashion Design

24-7 Style Q&A with Jamil Juma of JUMA Fashion Design Friday, 07 August 2009

Casual, yet unexpected...perfect for work, yet somehow able to be worn for day or night. I love designers that can mesh seemingly opposite aspects of a piece, into a wardrobe essential workable in any and every situation. It's why I've fallen in love with JUMA brand! The brother and sister team of Alia Juma and Jamil Juma have compiled looks for both men and women that simply stated...are perfect! The Canadian label is found in a host of stores throughout Canada, the U.S., and Japan such as Fred Segal, By George, and Caravan.

While each have their distinct roles in the JUMA brand, the sibling duo co-designs the collection that continues to grow in popularity in help due to their runway shows at Toronto Fashion Week and much publicity in numerous international magazines.

How did the concept of JUMA emerge?

The concept of JUMA is basically designing clothes that we would like to wear. Alia and myself work in a creative environment and hang out with creative people. Our clothing is a product of that environment.

I know when I was growing up, the last thing I would have wanted to do is work with my brother! What’s it truly like working so closely with your sibling?

Working with my sister Alia is amazing. There are no formalities or office politics. I can be myself and do my work. I believe the same goes for her as well. We have an understanding of each others boundaries and work around that. We also appreciate and respect each others work and feed off each others ideas. Its a harmonious relationship.

Do you notice any varying trends between your clients in Canada and your clients in the US?

For our particular customer, there is no difference in the way they dress. Our customer likes to wear unique, individual looks that hint downtown and sophistication no matter where they live. Our girl and boy is a person that gets fashion but doesn't need to be flashy. A more understated look. They can be living in New York, Vancouver, Dallas or Tokyo but they have the same mindset and taste.

What trends were you excited about for spring/summer? For the upcoming fall season?

To be honest. I know it sounds cliché but we don't really pay attention to what trends are going on. We subconsciously integrate it into our looks just by the feel of the environment but we don't consciously say "red" is hot and we need to put it in our collection. We just design what we want to wear and what our customer wants to wear and the direction has to feel right to us.

Your line is full of classic silhouettes with a little bit of an “edge,” an unexpected quality. How do you keep your designs fresh from season to season? Is there a specific design element you try to impress on each of your pieces?

We take silhouettes from the East and integrate it with silhouettes that are classic in the West. We update and modernize these silhouettes using unique design details and fabrications. Each season we evolve the look to what we feel is reflective of our and our customers environment and needs.

Getting to know Jamil...

Color of your kitchen walls: white...crisp looking.
Favorite thing to do on a Friday night: home with a friend having a drink and talking about whatever. Maybe catch a party if there is good music playing that night.
Favorite Indulgence: traveling anywhere with no hotel booked until I arrive and figure it out.
Favorite Food: South Indian
What's on Your Wish-list: I've got everything I want...I just want to continue to evolve, learn, and grow.

In the midst of developing the Mens Spring/Summer 2010 line we took a break to hang with Danielle Meder of Finalfashion.ca.  She came by last Friday to check out the new diggs, talk fashion and pick up a jacket. Here are some photos below.
