The Drake's new store

The Drake's new store

Recently we went to a party at the Drake General Store in Toronto to celebrate the opening of their third store. As you can see from the pics, the store had loads of interesting merchandise and an interesting atmosphere that makes it a pleasure to shop in. If you're in the area it's definitely a place worth dropping into.

Check out these pics from the party...

Dinner with The Hoof and the Heel

Dinner with The Hoof and the Heel

Yesterday we hung out with members of the band The Hoof and the Heel.  They are here from Montreal and stopped in for dinner.  We've posted some pics from the evening, and their video for the song 'Fireworks'.

They're going to be playing at the Drake Hotel in Toronto this Saturday for NXNE at 10pm, so check them out!

Shenzen

Shenzen

Every couple of months, we travel to Asia (China) and we will be posting photos of that experience.  So far, we have been to an amazing city called Shenzen.  This is a relatively new city that had a population of 13,000 people 30 years ago.  Now, the city boasts 30 million people!!  Yes, the size of Canada in 30 years time....unbelievable.  We cant get our heads around that fact.  Anyways, here are a few daytime pics.  We will update with some more interesting pics as they come.

Mass Exodus Excerpt: The wonderful wizard of OZ, Evan Biddell and his new studio boutique

Jamil Juma with Evan Biddel

Excerpt by intern Kenia:

On the second day of writing my final essay of the year (yippie!) I received a text much like the one I received for Fora’s launch. This time I was much less hesitant as I had such a good time at the launch that I thought what the heck, maybe I should go out more often.

This time I headed to Evan Biddell’s new studio boutique called Oz on guess where Ossington st! As I arrived a lovely girl was performing at the front of the room playing a beautiful song on her harp ( a harp!). To my left was a bartender from Reposado who offered me a delicious cocktail (yes, I am way over the legal drinking age) which tasted of sun and spring.

The interior resembled a boutique space you would find in Montreal, exposed brick, high ceilings and raw hardwood floors. For a moment I really thought I was Dorothy. (“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”) On mannequins lined up against the wall was Evan Biddell’s Spring 2010 collection and his Fall 2009 collection spread over a stainless steel wall held with magnets.

There I ran into the lovely Anita Clarke from I want, I got, Jamil Juma from JUMA and who else but the man of the hour, the wizard of Oz himself Evan Biddell.

If you have a chance do stop by the studio, follow the yellow brick road to the land of Oz conveniently located at 134 Ossington Ave. right between Queen and Dundas. With many parties, art openings and live model photo shoots to come I’m sure Oz will be one name that we will keep hearing about.

We decided to use a hijab for the 2010 Spring/Summer shoot.  We were all trying to figure out how to put one on.  Finally figured it out using Youtube....

Stay tune for our upcoming website launch in Mid-January 2010 to see how the campaign shots came out!

Toronto Fashion Week - The Week Before

Toronto Fashion Week - The Week Before Monday, 30 November 2009

Here are some shots of Toronto Fashion Week. Actually, this all happened the week before TFW started. We thought we would check out a few shows of friends of ours.

Below was some scenery at the Greta show, which took place at Audi headquarters and some pics from the Hudsons BayThe Hudsons Bay Company (HBC) had a party to showcase the newly upgraded St.Regis Room. The space was designed by Yabu Pushelberg and looked amazing.

There are also some pics of the Philip Sparks show.  The show took place in his studio.  Love the history and grittyness of his space.  Good show too...

2009 Fall/Winter Campaign - Behind the Scenes

We created our 2009 Fall/Winter Campaign many months ago.  Its the shots that are presently on our website in black and white.  The inspiration behind the campaign was a combination of many influences. As we work and play in a creative bubble surrounded by graphic designers, urban planners, painters, architects, photographers and stylists we are constantly inspired and feed of them to create JUMA.  Our collection is essentially a reflection of our environment.

Part of our inspirations came from looking at images below from photographer Justin Borbely.

Also, scenes from our neighbourhood in Toronto as well as in Williamsburg, where Hasidic Jewish people are prevalent, influenced our line.

We wanted to use elements of clean and understated into our collection while keeping the look fresh, directional and forward.

A song constantly playing in our studio was the one by Solid Gold - Who You Gonna Run To.
