JUMA on Public Personae (New York)

JUMA on Public Personae (New York) Tuesday, 28 April 2009

JUMA was featured on New York blog: Public Personae:

Canada: Home of the mighty moose, six time-zones, delicious bacon, and one of my new favorite lines, JUMA. Toronto based brother/sister duo Jamil and Alia Juma combined their creative powers to found their eponymous label, bringing with them their respective experience as an investment strategist and an actress/model fashion designer. I had first seen JUMA’s A/W 09 collection at Rendez-Vous NYC a few months ago and was excited to have the recent opportunity to see their collection a second time, but this time in a much more intimate setting. Their men’s and women’s fall 2009 collection fuses tailored with easy-going and a subtle south asian influence seen in the drop-crotch pants that JUMA calls “Kurtas.” I’m particularly struck by what is, in my mind, the centerpiece of the women’s collection– the fantastic kurtas jumpsuit. I love the structured bodice paired with the drapey harem. Wear it with anything from a tux shirt to a tee shirt…done. The simplicity of JUMA’s palette and pieces is also incredibly refreshing. Their focus is a keen attention to details, and I know I really take pleasure in being able to discover the surprise features on each of JUMA’s pieces such as the crisp button-down with a reinvented wing-tip. JUMA also makes me want to wear a suit. I know that I don’t talk about men’s collections too often but their low-crotch pants paired with crop jacket would be awesome on any guy or daring gal.

Pay attention because you’ll surely be seeing a lot more from these talented Canadian siblings in the near future…OAK has already picked up pieces from their line. You can also buy pieces from their S/S line on JUMA’s website.  I’m partial to the black pouch top that I was quite excited to walk away with (pictured below). I feel like I could quite easily wear this top for the next thirty days straight. Its faint origami architecture and soft cotton panels on the shoulders makes it even more amazing in person…

Oak has just gotten in a few pieces from Juma, brother and sister duo that originated in Canada. The black kurta pants stood out the most to us, and how could they not? The black slim fit pants with a drop crotch and exaggerated back pockets are quite unique.

JUMA on Fashion Indie

JUMA on Fashion Indie Thursday, 02 April 2009

Popular New York blog "Fashion Indie", recently did an article on "Trends to Fall In Love With" and included a segment on drop crotch trousers....see article below:

By Corey Moran

With the changing of seasons and the tight economic times, comes a time to step back and really evaluate your look before going out and spending money on items you’ll hate in a couple weeks. So instead of doing one massive post about all the upcoming Spring trends, I figured I’d break it up and introduce to you a cool little installment called Spring Fling: Trends To Fall In Love With This Spring. I know money is tight, so I’ll do my best to provide some cheap alternatives for all you indies forced to pinch pennies this Spring.

By far my favorite look for this upcoming Spring. The hype has been building around this trend since September’s Fashion Week season, and I’m finally ready to see it flow into the masses. The drop crotch trouser is something that can be done very well with relative ease. User beware, if you don’t get the right size you may look like you’re rockin’ hammer pants and nobody wants that. The cool part about these pants is the versatility for the weather. If it’s warm, crop them up like the you see in some of these images. If it’s cold, drop crotch looks great on a full length pant as well.

Don’t have the couple hundred dollars to spend on some of the options I have listed here? No worries, I didn’t either when I got my pair. Here is an easy way to sort of DIY at a low cost. Find a pair of extremely high wasted jeans/pants from Cheap Monday ($65 always!) and just simply wear them like you would normally wear pants rather than high waisted. The stretch material that Cheap Monday uses still allows you to move freely. ***Be sure to try them on though, the waist tends to run  bit smaller because they are intended for a natural waist!

So here’s a simple moto to remember while out Spring shopping this season, ” Drop the crotch not the dough!”
