Behind The Scenes

Rendezvous Show Pics

Rendezvous Show Pics Wednesday, 11 November 2009

Here are some additional photos that were taken at a show in New York called RendezVous. We had some editors and buyers meet with us to view our upcoming 2010 Spring Summer line.

The space had a unique feel to it combining elements from log cabins and industrial spaces. It worked well with the display of the collection.

oaknyc.com is now selling these pieces from
our fall/winter collection. We love how the kurta
pants and jumpsuits are styled with the heels.

Imran Amed, the founder of businessoffashion.com, Amed&Co as well as a founding member of luxurysociety.com was recently featured in Another Magazine.  They talked about his background and history in the fashion industry and the various projects he is carrying out.  In the picture above, he is also wearing a JUMA vest underneath his blazer.

Imran also came to Toronto recently and we all hung out.  Good to see him after 2 years.

Cycling

Below are some pics from our trip to Montreal.  The shots gave us some references to use for our upcoming 2010 fall/winter collection (yes, we are designing that at the moment).  Sport influences mixed with the vagabonds hanging out in the area.  We have been seeing alot of cycling references in the last little while and see a growing movement in that area.  The city of Montreal has even started renting out bikes to pedestrians, which we would love to see in other cities...

Behind The Scenes - Online Store Shoot

We recently shot our new winter items for our online store.  Karen Roze came to shoot it while Sienna and Liam modeled. It was a long day.  We had to shoot over 50 items in all the different colours available.  Below are some shots:

Recently, Alia JUMA made a trip to NY for a 2010 Spring/Summer presentation of the JUMA collection. Below are some pics taken in Brooklyn from her iphone.

Some highlights: The pizza pic is of Adam Clark Estes (The Huffington Post), Alia Juma and Michael Gould. The barber pic, where Tariq is getting a haircut at 9:30pm before going out for dinner (they started calling him "hair" at his old investment banking job).

Rendez-Vous returned to New York for its second installment from September 18-21. Juma was there along with tens of other designers from across the country and globe. This time, only Alia was able to make the trip, but we had a great time hanging out at the show, and galavanting around Manhattan and Williamsburg.

Unlike Vegas, I made sure to take pictures of my favorite Juma pieces. It was a great collection, and I’m excited to see how consumers respond when the clothing hits retailers in a few months!

Here is a pic of Alia at the show in front of Juma’s hot, new banner showcasing pics from their most recent campaign.

One of my favorite women’s looks this season is this black v-neck dress. The body of the dress is made of a cotton knit fabric, but it is accompanied by a cotton-nylon blend woven that creates the interesting shape along the front. It reminds of the shape of a razor-back vest, which scoops down to create the oversized pockets. I think the dress is chic, forward, but understated. Very hot.

Naturally though, I focused more of my attention on the menswear. One of my favorite additions this season is a cropped version of the lablel’s popular drop-crop trousers. Big fan of the pockets added to the legs of the pants. Here’s a pic of a pair in charcoal.

I was also a big fan of the sweaters added this season. This gray, zip-up cardigan with the large pocket along the left side is one of my favorites. The pocket is created with a fabric of a contrasting texture…the same cotton-nylon blend woven used in the dress shown above, and in a lot of the other pieces this season. Once again, Juma takes a classic silhouette and makes it their own with subtle, yet incredibly thoughtful detailing. Loves it!

Bartertown

Bartertown Sunday, 04 October 2009

"I took these photos at Bartertown, a weekly gathering of young, creative types in East Vancouver. Here, you can trade anything for anything: clothes, CDs, baking, homemade alcohol or conversation. What you get depends on what you bring and what people will trade you for it.

The people you encounter at the growing number of events like this are decked out in a way that really personifies the D-I-Y, arts and crafts aesthetic that is de rigueur in East Vancouver.

Their style is both effortless and deliberate – there’s something inspiring in the earnestness with which they approach community building that is reminiscent of the vibe of the weird, funny art class kids in high school that all sat together in the cafeteria."
