The Drake's new store

The Drake's new store

Recently we went to a party at the Drake General Store in Toronto to celebrate the opening of their third store. As you can see from the pics, the store had loads of interesting merchandise and an interesting atmosphere that makes it a pleasure to shop in. If you're in the area it's definitely a place worth dropping into.

Check out these pics from the party...

How would you feel about a second life as a chair? Dutch design studio Weike Somers explored the concept of reusing human ashes as a form of 'second life', so you could potentially end up as anything from a toaster to a vacuum cleaner...we're not sure how we feel about a second life as a vacuum cleaner though...

Somers actually created 3 products made of human ashes, all of which have 'symbolic meanings
and could serve as a tool to contribute to a better way of live, or more ideal way of dealing
with its surrounding context, the environment. human ashes would afford to products
an emotional value that is more luxurious than any existing material.'

What's really interesting is that the project is actually a statement about the current state of affairs in design and that we need a new view on what is necessary in the 21st century. A question it brings up is whether we would pay more for objects made of human ashes, or whether we would become more emotionally attached to these objects. We're not really sure we would buy anything made of human ashes though...it might be a little creepy to be sitting on someone's ashes, or using them to suck up dirt...nonetheless...interesting concept.

Peter Callesen

Cutting paper into designs seems like something worthy of a kindergarden class, but Peter Callesen's delicate, hauntingly realistic art pieces are far from children's crafts.

His paper figures remain fragile and seem as if they have been frozen amidst a flurry of movement. They are meticilous in detail and have a wonderful dreamlike quality.

Lost Art for Inglorious Basterds

02/18/10-Lost Art for Inglorious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino launched an art auction at the Upper Playground Art Gallery in downtown Los Angeles titled, "Lost Art for Inglorious Basterds." Upper Playground, originating in San Francisco, is widely recognized as the frontrunner for today's progressive art movement, featuring the talents of artists such as Alex Pardee and David Choe.

The art show displayed works contributed by notable artists, namely, David Choe, Sam Flores, Jeremy Fish, Estevan Oriol, Grotesk, among many others, who have created original posters in their personal interpretations of Tarantino's Oscar-nominated film, Inglorious Basterds. Each poster was numbered and signed by Tarantino himself and was extremely limited to only 6 prints per poster.

All proceeds from the auction went to the American Red Cross for Haiti relief benefits. Here's to art for a cause! Check out the posters below.
